Biography:
Interviews

His name is Devon Samuel but you may know him better as the reggae artiste, ‘Prophet Benjamin’. Born in Point Fortin, on the Caribbean island of Trinidad, his career as a singer/songwriter began in 2005 when he released his first reggae single “Pretty Boy” which instantly gained massive popularity on the major radio stations and in the popular nightclubs. Since then Prophet Benjamin has achieved nationwide and international recognition and has built a reputation as Trinidad’s best reggae entertainer and most requested performer.
Since the release of his first single, every other release by Prophet Benjamin has been a large hit on the airways. Songs like: “Moruga” “Delilah” “Usual Suspects” “Field ah Weed” “Stop” “Pension Plan” “Thousand Arrows” “What’s Next” “Marianna” “Talk Nah” “Rastaman” “Most Beautiful” have all earned him huge respect.

In the past 10 years Prophet Benjamin has performed his numorous hit singles in over 500 stage shows all across Trinidad and Tobago. More than just once, he has also met the requests for him to perform regionally and internationally in: Barbados, Carriacou, St. Vincent, Grenada, Brooklyn, Washington, Montreal and London. He has shared the stage with Capleton, Buju Banton, Beenie Man, Tarrus Riley, Freddy Mc Greggor, Anthony B, Culture, Junior Kelly Reid, Ritchie Spice, Jah Cure, Jr. Gong, Stephen Marley, Sizzla and many other big names in reggae.

There are a few different aspects that, combined together, are what make up Prophet Benjamin’s style and art form and are the main reasons he is so highly requested and successful on the stage. His song writing reflects the great storyteller that he is. He is able to take an entire audience through an experience that they can all relate to and creates an interactive relationship with them within his songs. His “hook lines” and melodies are simple, highly effective and memorable, which are the tenants of a hit song. His political awareness allows him to remain true to the art of the reggae and calypso singer in the Caribbean and of course is a strong point of reggae singers, messengers and entertainers that stretch back to the days of Bob Marley and is the core of songs like “Rastaman”, “Pension Plan”, “Usual Suspects” etc. Songs like “Delilah” are meant to quicken the awareness of HIV and AIDS in Trinidad and Tobago while making that awareness stick to the minds of the listeners with catchy melodies and punch lines. His latest releases "Most Beautiful" and "What if I told you" reveal another side of this versitile and passionate artiste where he touches on matters of the heart and love.

In 2011 Prophet Benjamin made a move that surprised most, pleased many and made some into haters. He composed a soca tune and released it for Carnival 2012. The soca single entitled “Throw Wine” became a hit regardless of what many of his haters had to say. The song stayed true to the tradition of calypso and uses both story telling and a play on words with the punch line “she throw wine on me, so I throw wine on she”. Prophet Benjamin made it to the 2012 soca Monarch without even trying and managed tied 4th place with the soca artiste known as Blacks against many others who have been part of the soca music fraternity for as long as Prophet Benjamin has been in the reggae fraternity. This move has been crucial in not only keeping him from fading out like so many other talented reggae artistes, but it has multiplied his audience exponentially and gained him the respect of the big players in the business, setting him aside from the rest.

Most recently Prophet Benjamin has teamed up with Trinidad's most requested reggae band Mystic Elements to take his career to the next level. Securing himself with a band like Mystic Elemnts on stage has prooven to greatly increase the energy and professionalism of his already interactive and dynamic performance. Aside from on stage he has already made plans with band

leader and producer Anthony "Stoney" Grant to begin work on the first Prophet Benjamin album release. Along with the release of this album will come 3 highly anticipated music videos for 3 of his hit singles. With these three crucial moves Prophet is geared toward international festivals and gigs.
